The Social Network tops the box office this week. With reviews overwhelmingly positive across the board (Hell, even its rating on Rotten Tomatoes is, as of this writing, sitting at 97%) the last thing the world needs is another wordy, over the top, “A+” type review. In true Tt(h)B fashion, this post is designed to share the top 5 things that up and coming (and even established) entrepreneurs will walk away with. In other words, here are 5 reasons entrepreneurs should see ‘The Social Network’:
1. The “birth of an idea” is visualized beautifully.
One of the primary themes discussed throughout the film is “Whose idea was facebook?”. No matter where the initial spark of invention came from, the important thing is that before that ‘spark’ fades into darkness it needs to collide with execution. Invention without execution is useless. Execution without invention is useless (and wasteful). Invention + Execution = Facebook.
2. It will fire you up.
It makes you question if your own ventures are big enough. The main character sets goals, and is pushed to beat them (and we all know how that turned out). Any entrepreneur who sees this film will, unquestionably, walk out amped. Period.
3. It is a reality check (on so many levels).
This film touches on so many entrepreneurial hurdles it is hard to keep track, but here it goes: money changes people, a good team is very hard to find, sharing information is a calculated risk, love makes people do funny things, and finally- success can happen at lightening speeds (the core timeline of the movie is reported to be what occurred over an 18 month period… not to mention Facebook is JUST 7 YEARS OLD).
4. It is further proof that Passion wins.
Whether consciously or not, this film illustrates in a very interesting way why passion wins. Passion trumps everything. It provides perseverance when needed. It fuels the main character through every single scene. And it, more than any other film in recent memory, does an impeccable job of showing just how rare, how persistent, and how consuming true passion is.
5. It is truly an “instant classic”.
Ok, fine, so maybe this is a bit of a positive review after all. No matter how you look at it, this film is far above average. To quote the top review from Rotten Tomatoes “It was impeccably scripted, beautifully directed, and filled with fine performances, The Social Network is a riveting, ambitious example of modern filmmaking at its finest.”
