Business Design IS...

I like creating solutions out of design. I live for turning nothing more than an idea, into a living breathing system (much more than I like the day to day management of it). Once it works, and satisfies the need, I pass it on, I am bored with it, and my mind is no longer challenged.

That said, the future of Tt(h)B will bring posts that focus more on good and bad business processes with respect to design. The 'good' will serves as a foundation for the grad idea that Design is the most essential component of any business. The 'bad' will serve as case studies with Tt(h)B’s open call for a resolution with suggestions.

So what exactly is 'design' in relation to business?

Design is Perspective

Creating through good design includes is the ability to look at a company, a problem, or a situation from every angle possible (whether it be at the atomic level, or from 40,000 feet up), anticipate threats and opportunities, and create accordingly. Have you considered every angle?

Design is Synchronized

Business Design is the marriage of three deceptively simple questions: What? Why? How?  If necessity is the mother of invention, design is the womb. Components are created, assembled, and passed on based on resources and needs from the ground up. How synchronized is your design?

Design is 'Marketing 2.0'

In school, marketing students used to be taught that “Marketing is a battle of perceptions, not products”  This is the mindset of marketing 1.0.  You cannot possibly thrive in business today if your product does not meet its perception. Design throws away the notion that a catchy jingle, a 'hot' model, or a costly ad campaign can mask a crappy product and gets to the core of the matter: creating better products. Period.  Are you adding bells and whistles, or making noise with them?

Design is Educated

Assumptions have a place in the world of Business Design... the recycle bin.   Design is calculated, tested, and verified. Good design may not answer all the questions, but it can certainly ask them. How smart is the system you have in place?

Design is Everywhere

No two ways about it.  Every object you touch, every place you go, even every thing you do (every single day) is infused with design.  Some good, some bad; design is a reflection of the minds that conceived them.  It evolves over time. What does your business/product/service design reflect?

Tomorrow we conclude our definition of Business Design by sharing precisely what "Design is NOT..."
