Be the Board
In The Art of Possibilty by Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander, the Zanders’ advise the reader to “…rename yourself as the board on which the whole game is played…move the problematic aspect of any circumstance from the outside world inside the boundaries of yourself. With this act you can transform the world.”
The authors allude to a game of chess when describing the board. We often view ourselves as the ever important king, the powerful queen or the elusive knight, but how often do we view ourselves as the board on which the game is played?
When we think of ourselves as the board, we accept the fact that all the factors surrounding our lives are just the pieces moving above the board. We accept factors outside of our realm of control as just that, factors outside of our realm of control.
“Being the board” means we accept the notion that there are certain things in our lives that are just pieces moving around us, sometimes directly affecting us and sometimes passing us by without the slightest recognition.
Could the thousands of travelers in Europe have done anything differently to prevent from getting stuck in their current location due to the after effects of the volcano in Iceland? They have two choices, dwell on the fact that their trips have been canceled, or accept the fact they the volcano was just another piece on the board of life, and either find an alternative mode of travel or get comfortable in their current location.
Be the board.
