On a seemingly uneventful day last month I sent an email that, when I look back now (and for years to come), became a pivotal moment in the course of my life. That is a bold statement… I know that. Here is a quick recap of what took place. (And why you should try it right now!)
While doing research for my first book (Details coming soon!), I stumbled across this article on a website called Social Earth. The article talked about what seemed to be a pretty cool product: The world’s only recycled surfboard manufacturer. After reading the article I dug a little deeper and decided to click on the green foam home page, which at the time looked terrible.
Overall, it was not a bad site, but as I dug deeper it appeared it was nothing more than the hollow shell of a once great idea.
The site had not been updated since mid 2009, there was zero “social” engagement (Facebook, twitter, blog) and sections of the site even had visible notes with things like:
“Need image of HB Street Here”
Littering the site.
Call it procrastination from writing the book (or doing actual work for that matter), but I drafted the following in an email, and mindlessly hit “send”:
I stumbled across your site and noticed you are looking to fill in an advisory board of Industry Professionals, and I am eager to help. I have worked in the field of marketing and strategic planning in some form or another since 2001. It appears the site is either a.) in need of an update or b.) ReSurf as a company has lost a bit of steam.
I believe in what you are trying to do, and have quite a few ideas on how to help resurf grow to the level it should. If you guys are still running strong, and are looking for assistance (particularly in the areas of marketing, branding, and web presence) please contact me.
No more than 5 minutes later the phone rang. Less than 24 hours later I was officially on the team, and suddenly in charge of the web presence for 4 of the fastest growing companies in the surf industry.
Jeff Pulver, creator of #140 conference, and all around great guy likes to talk about the idea that “the next person you meet could change your life”. I agree 100%. In my case I met one person who has fundamentally altered the course of my life BECAUSE I sent one email.
So get out there! Reach out far beyond what you think is possible, and I guarantee if you persevere… you will be amazed with what can happen.
